Questions & answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Appointments, Insurance & Billing
How much does a cleaning cost?
The cost of a dental cleaning can vary depending on your insurance plan, contracted fees, coverage levels, and which X-rays you may be due for at the time of your visit. For patients paying out of pocket, we offer an Annual Prevention Plan (APP) for $375 for adults and $350 for children, which includes:
- 2 dental cleanings and exams
- Routine bitewing X-rays
- Up to 3 periapical X-rays
- Full-mouth or panoramic X-ray, if needed
- 15% off treatment recommended by a general dentist
Please contact our office if you would like more information about your estimated cost or our Annual Prevention Plan.
Do you take walk-ins or dental emergencies?
We do our best to accommodate dental emergencies as quickly as possible. We recommend calling our office before coming in so we can determine the nature of the emergency, check our availability, and arrange the soonest appropriate appointment.
Do you take my insurance?
We accept most private and PPO dental insurance plans. However, there are some Medicare and state-funded plans that we may not accept.
Because participation and coverage can vary by plan, we recommend contacting our office with your insurance information so our team can verify whether we participate with your specific plan.
I received a statement. What do I do?
If you received a statement and are ready to pay your balance, please call our office directly and select extension 0 to make a payment.
If you have questions regarding your balance or would like to review the charges on your account, please contact our Billing Manager directly at (843) 369-2384 for assistance.
Do you have parking?
Yes! We have parking available for patients at our Waltham, Needham, and Lexington office locations for your convenience.
Our Brighton location does not have a designated parking lot; however, we are located on the Green Line and street parking is available in the surrounding area. We recommend allowing a few extra minutes before your appointment to find street parking.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans can change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we ask that you provide our office with at least 48 hours’ notice.
Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice or missed appointments may be subject to a $150 cancellation fee. Depending on your appointment history, a $150 room reservation fee may also be required before scheduling a new appointment. Room reservation fees are refundable upon completion of the scheduled appointment.
We understand that illness and unexpected circumstances can occur and will take these situations into consideration. If you have questions regarding our cancellation policy or need to make a change to an upcoming appointment, please contact our office directly.
Clinical Questions
How often should I have a dental cleaning and exam?
Every 6 months, though your dentist may recommend a different schedule based on your oral health. Regular dental visits help identify potential issues early and keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. Dental X-rays use a low dose of radiation, and the risk from an individual X-ray is very small. Your dentist recommends X-rays to help identify the cause of any symptoms that may not be visible during an exam.
Does a root canal hurt?
Most patients are comfortable during a root canal because the dentist anesthetizes the area before treatment. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is common, especially in cases of extreme discomfort beforehand.
What should I expect after a tooth extraction?
Once the anesthesia wears off, some soreness, mild swelling, and light bleeding or pink saliva are normal. These symptoms should gradually improve over the next few days. Follow the post-op instructions provided by the treating dentist to help the area heal.
What is a dry socket?
Dry socket is a condition that can happen after a tooth extraction. The main signs are pain that gets worse instead of better, a bad taste in your mouth, or bad breath. If you think you have a dry socket, call the office to be seen and evaluated.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. It can support a crown that looks and functions like a tooth, or help hold a bridge or denture in place. Your dentist can evaluate whether an implant is an option for you.
When should my child have their first dental visit?
We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit within 6 months of their first tooth coming in, and no later than their first birthday. This early visit lets the dentist check how their teeth are developing and answer questions about caring for them at home.
What is a night guard?
A night guard is a removable dental appliance worn over your teeth while you sleep. It helps protect your teeth from wear or damage caused by grinding or clenching.
What’s the difference between a custom night guard and one from a store?
A custom dental night guard is made from a computer scan of your teeth so it fits precisely, and it is checked by your dentist. Store-bought guards cost less and are self-formed; however, their fit may be less precise and comfortable. Your dentist can help determine the best guard for any grinding or clenching you may be experiencing.
